M-2366 POST DOC POSITION FOR SURFACE TREATMENT OF BAMBOO FIBERS FOR
COMPOSITE APPLICATIONS
Temporary contract 30 months Full-time/40h HautcharageAre you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You'd like to contribute as a researcher? Join our Materials Research
and Technology department
Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT's activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
How will you contribute?
We are expecting you to develop new formulations for treating bamboo fibers and improving their chemical and physical characteristics for composite applications: (1) moisture sensitivity causing fibre swell and rapid degradation, (2) poor interfacial bonding between fibre and industrially relevant polymers, and (3) low thermal stability at the required processing temperatures of commonly used polymers.
The planned innovation will allow the introduction to the market of bamboo fibres which naturally copes with moist environments, and by engineering its surface, adhesion and thermal stability will be improved at the same time. This will allow a nearly zero reduction of fibre mechanical properties and their composites in wet environments. Furthermore, this project will also broaden the range of polymers (higher melting temperatures) with better compatibility and mechanical properties, thereby widening the number of applications for bamboo fibre composites. These enhanced functionalities are expected to enhance the market position of bamboo fibres and allow penetration into new market segments.
You will have access to cutting-edge labs equipped with state-of-the-art characterization facilities. Experts in the field will be on hand to provide technical support, and advanced micromechanical characterization and fiber composite manufacturing will be at your fingertips.
With the help of relevant spectrometric (FTIR, NMR, XPS, MALDI, ToF SIMS) and chromatographic (GPC) tools, structural characterization methods (SEM, ESEM, AFM, microCT), thermal analysis equipment (TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, etc.), mechanical (quasi-static tensile, flexural, micro pull-out, nano indentation, micro 3D digital image correlation, etc.) and physical testing (contact angle), you will be able to fully explore the potential of bamboo fibers as composite reinforcement.
Your position will be funded by FNR (Luxembourg National Research Fund) in the frame of the BRIDGES program, providing financial support for industry partnerships between LIST and Bambooder Biobased Fiber B.V. (The Netherlands).
Is your profile described below? Are you our future colleague? Apply
now!
You hold a hold a PhD degree in chemistry science/engineering or a related discipline (materials science). You have experimental background in chemistry and surface engineering, especially on cellulosic based materials, as demonstrated by first author-publications in Q1 journals. Experience with natural fibres is desirable and then will be considered as an asset (also proved by publication in this field).
If you are a team player, able to adapt, solution-oriented, open to other researchers' ideas, and used to work in a timely fashion to meet deadlines, please apply to this job opportunity!
