The Department of Political Science , Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), invites candidates for two postdoctoral positions (36 months). Supported by the Carlsberg Foundation, the chosen candidates will work in the Origins of Descriptive Representation (ODER) project alongside a research assistant and Associate Professor Frederik Hjorth (PI) as well as international collaborators.
The preferred starting date is 1 September 2023.
Your Duties and Responsibilities As the core research unit of the ODER project, the chosen candidates will cooperate in using machine learning to digitize historical Danish general election data at the candidate level. The ODER project then uses these data to study how the election of underrepresented candidates—specifically, women and working-class candidates—affects the behavior of voters, competing parties, and other elected officials. The chosen candidate will contribute to the project with their expertise, interests, and skills, and is expected to publish scientific articles in international journals as well as to present findings at international conferences. In general, the position is highly research-focused, and funding is available for data collection and conference attendance such that candidates can extend their international network and increase their research expertise.
Your Competencies and Opportunities The candidate must have obtained a PhD degree in Political Science, Economics, Sociology, or a related field. Ideally, applicants have research experience in political representation, party politics, methods for causal inference, and/or text as data. Candidates with strong research interests in these areas and methodological interests and skills are encouraged to apply. The ideal applicant has publication experience in internationally recognized scientific journals, and the chosen candidate is expected to contribute with collaboration skills to the research team. High proficiency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Given the task of working with data on Danish candidacies and occupation labels, some familiarity with Danish or a related language, such as but not limited to Scandinavian languages, Dutch, or German is an advantage but not a requirement.
Department of Political Science The Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen (https: // polsci.ku.dk) hosts a large group of productive faculty, post docs and PhD-students.
