The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Fellow who wants to be part of our research team for 2 years and investigate the role of APP in cilia function during development and aging. We are a multidisciplinary group with both preclinical and clinical research in neurodegenerative diseases. The group has an international mix of researchers from all over the world.

Subject area

Neuroscience

Subject area description

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), changes occur in the brain that break down neurons and their synapses. The underlying processes mediating this nerv cell breakdown is probably multifactorial, but there is a very strong connection to changes in APP (Amyloid precursor protein) being an important component. We have identified APP in cilia of a number of different cell types that are affected in AD and now want to continue with these findings to study how cilia are affected and contribute to the course of the disease. We will study this using zebrafish as a model system because they allow us to study and manipulate the movements of cilia while simultaneously studying CSF (spinal fluid) flow or neuronal activity.

Job assignments

The duties include conducting studies on the importance of cilia in development and aging. The project will mainly be performed with zebrafish as a model system, but may also include studies on other model systems and human CSF samples from individuals with AD. The aim is to understand how APP affects the structure and function of cilia, as well as CSF flow and whether this can affect the mechanisms that occur in AD pathology. The goal is to study, describe and validate the significance and, if possible, further develop preclinical findings on clinical materials and present and publish the results in scientific articles.

The methods included are primarily studies of zebrafish with immunohistochemistry (IHC), high-resolution confocal microscopy and advanced image analysis, CRISPR/Cas9 to generate new transgenic models, molecular biological methods (qPCR, cloning) and biochemical (Western blot, ELISA).

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher for this position, the applicant should hold a PhD in biology, biomedicine or medicine.

Assessment

When assessing the applicants, great importance will be attached to previous research experience with zebrafish, cilia and previous knowledge in advanced confocal microscopy and image analysis as well as work with genomic editing. Knowledge and experience in Alzheimer's disease or other brain diseases is particularly meritorious but not decisive. This must be documented through publications in international scientific journals with a peer-review system.

Good ability to independently process data and write scientific publications is a prerequisite, as is the ability to work both in a group and independently and to otherwise be flexible and initiative-taking. Great weight will also be attached to personal suitability.

The candidate must demonstrate very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 2 years, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as soon as possible or as agreed.
