About the research centre or Inria department
The Inria research centre in Lyon is the 9th Inria research centre, formally created in January 2022. It brings together approximately 300 people in 16 research teams and research support services.
Its staff are distributed at this stage on 2 campuses: in Villeurbanne La Doua (Centre / INSA Lyon / UCBL) on the one hand, and Lyon Gerland (ENS de Lyon) on the other.
The Lyon centre is active in the fields of software, distributed and high- performance computing, embedded systems, quantum computing and privacy in the digital world, but also in digital health and computational biology.
Context
This postdoctoral position is funded in the framework of the PEPR “5G et reseaux du futur” of the national recovery plan, in the collaborative project FUNDS lead by Prof François Baccelli. The student will be supervised by Jean-Marie Gorce, professor at INSA Lyon and affiliated to Inria Lyon, in collaboration with François Baccelli.
The key objective of the position is to elaborate on a new theoretical framework to design new communication rules in wireless multi-user context with (almost) deterministic delay and reliability guarantees. This objective is required to sustain the development of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications in the context of robotics, industry4.0 and vehicular communications. The candidate will primarily work on elaborating a theoretical framework relying upon information theory, queuing theory and stochastic network calculus.
The postdoc student will be hosted in INRIA Lyon, with regular visits to INRIA Paris.
Assignment
The general scope of the position is thus related to extreme reliable and latency constraints in multi-user scenarios.
When decoding deadlines are less or in the order of a slot duration, high guarantees in terms of latency and reliability have to be studied at the channel use level in the framework of non-asymptotic information theory. Te proposed research program will elaborate upon finite block-length information theory 1,2,3 and joint coding strategies such as superposition coding, dirty paper coding or rate splitting multiple access. In this line of work, a recent original contribution relies on considering heterogeneous arrivals and deadlines, with dynamic joint coding (see 4,5). When the deadline constraints are indeed very strong and impose immediate transmission, the only possible action is to minimize the risk of failed transmission by choosing an optimal immediate strategy. While the prior target is on the broadcast channel, and its dual, the multiple access channel, the interference channel may be also useful to study an infrastructureless scenario.
When the decoding deadline constraints are less stringent, compared to the slot time, scheduling and queues management become important too. To ensure strong reliability, optimal scheduling and resource allocation can be investigated in the framework of stochastic network calculus 6. An open challenge is how to extend stochastic network calculus methods to design queue regulation mechanisms (beyond sigma-rho and service curve regulation) that incorporates new PHY layer protocols (based on the aforementioned strategies). The goal will be to establish queue management algorithms with strong statistical latency guarantees beyond expected latencies.
The work program will follow
(i) Formulation of the FBL multi-user limits in the downlink, for heterogeneous arrival and deadline short packets.
(ii) Derivation of achievable bounds with joint coding strategies, considering MIMO channels and fading, with perfect channel knowledge.
(iii) Derivation of large scale limits with stochastic geometry.
(iv) Integration of scheduling strategies relying upon stochastic network calculus.
