Susan Peters, PhD, in the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to join the World Trade Center Non-Traditional Responders' Employment and Mental Health Study. This study is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and aims to identify how employment and working conditions, as well as union and employer policies, programs, and practices, have affected World Trade Center non- traditional responders' mental health, well-being, and health behaviors since the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attacks. Dr. Peters and the other Study Co-Investigators are affiliated with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Center for Work, Health, and Well-being, a NIOSH Total Worker Health ® Center of Excellence focused on understanding workplace policies, programs, and practices to improve the conditions of work supporting employee safety, health, and well-being.
This position will begin as soon as an appropriate candidate is identified, with the possibility of annual renewal, depending on progress and available funding. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow with a background in occupational health and safety, with experience in qualitative research, survey design, data collection, data management, and data analysis. Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese, in addition to English, is preferred. This fellowship includes mentored research focusing on identifying the ways in which World Trade Center non-traditional responders' employment profiles, working conditions, and employer and union supportive policies, programs, and practices affect their mental health, work-related well-being, and lifestyle medicine factors. There are also opportunities to collaborate across other Center for Work, Health, and Well-being studies.
The postdoctoral fellow will participate in all phases of this mixed-methods study. Responsibilities include assisting Dr. Peters in project coordination and administration. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to qualitative research activities such as the development of the key stakeholder interview scripts, coding and thematic analysis of qualitative data, and interpretation of the research findings. Quantitative research responsibilities will include survey development, survey programming for electronic administration, monitoring on-going survey administration and completion, data analysis, interpretation of findings and dissemination. It is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will lead manuscript preparation for at least two publications during their fellowship, and contribute to other papers and conference presentations.
Basic Qualifications
· Doctoral degree in public health (including occupational or environmental health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health and social behavior, and related fields), the social and behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology, psychology), exposure science, industrial hygiene, nursing, or related fields or with a medical degree. Pre-doctoral candidates with relevant training and work experience will be considered.
· Specialization or demonstrated interest in the study of workers' health and well-being
· Advanced skills in statistical analysis, including experience conducting longitudinal analyses
· Experience writing research papers for publication in peer-review journals
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Additional Qualifications
Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese, in addition to English, is preferred. Prior experience with qualitative data coding using NVivo (or similar) software
