PostDoc Position in „Understanding Antarctic Sea Ice: Variability, Changes,
and Future Evolution“ (m/f/d)
Background Polar sea ice has undergone contrasting changes due to global warming. While Arctic ice has significantly decreased in extent and volume, the Southern Ocean initially experienced a gradual increase before a recent decline, leaving the causes and impacts of these shifts still unclear. The project aims therefore to better understand the temporal and spatial variability of the different components of the Antarctic sea ice mass budget and its interaction with the atmosphere and ocean. As such, it will serve to reduce the current significant uncertainties in satellite-derived data products and sea ice models for the ice-covered Southern Ocean, which is required also for assessing the future evolution of the Antarctic sea ice mass budget. The project is funded through the German Research Council (DFG) in the framework of the priority program “Antarctic Research with comparative investigations in the Arctic ice areas”.
You will use field and remote sensing observations of the ice-covered Southern Ocean, including data from recent field studies in the Weddell Sea. In addition, sensitivity studies will be conducted to investigate the effects of changing atmospheric and oceanic conditions, utilizing downscaling experiments in a sea ice /ocean model. These findings will serve as a baseline for future climate model runs, offering preliminary insights into potential changes in Antarctic sea ice properties and mass budget under warming climate scenarios.
You are expected to work self-reliably as the responsible scientist for managing the project, its deliverables and work in the network of collaborators. The project is embedded in the Young Investigator and Bridge Group between the Alfred Wegener Institute and the University of Hamburg. Working hours at each location will be agreed with you.
Tasks
Quantifying the temporal and spatial variability of sea ice growth processes contributing to the sea ice mass budget from numerous airborne, ground-based and autonomous ice and snow thickness observations
Assessment of large-scale sea ice volume regimes retrieved from satellite remote sensing products and from forced sea ice/ocean model simulations, such as the Finite-volumE Sea ice Ocean Model, FESOM2
Conducting sensitivity studies with proposed changes in atmospheric and oceanic conditions following the most robust signals of global warming as given in the IPCC report
Publication of results in scientific journals and presentation at scientific conferences
Requirements
PhD or equivalent degree in physics, geophysics, meteorology, or a related field
sound experience in scientific programming
handling and analyzing of observational data
excellent English communication skills
good teamwork abilities
