Position description

The Beltran Lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Demography of Long-Lived Vertebrates. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Roxanne Beltran, the postdoctoral researcher will collaboratively analyze elephant seal mark-recapture data to complement ongoing Beltran Lab research on ecology, physiology, and behavior. Research questions, developed in partnership with Dr. Beltran and the lab group, may include life history tradeoffs such as current/future reproduction and survival, or fitness consequences of environmental variation. The position is flexible around the unique needs and skills of the successful candidate. In collaboration with Dan Costa, available data include >320,000 sightings of 51,000 unique, known-age animals across six decades, along with offspring size data for thousands of pups born to known-moms.

We seek a candidate with extensive mark-recapture modeling experience and advanced coding skills in R. An established track record of publications in vertebrate demography is desired. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, demonstrates creativity, is compassionate and patient with others, communicates clearly, and can take constructive criticism well. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing marginalized groups in higher education, especially candidates who have experience in building equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching, mentoring, and other professional activities. UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-generation students. In addition to leading this project, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with a variety of lab members (e.g., graduate students, technicians, and undergraduate student field assistants) to learn the wildlife system, develop mentoring relationships, and benefit from engagement in relevant manuscripts. Additionally, the postdoctoral researcher will be encouraged to engage in professional development with our vibrant research community and teaching center on campus. Opportunities for participation in field data collection are available.

Applicants with a track record of mark-recapture research publications are strongly encouraged to apply.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS All documents and materials must be submitted as PDFs and should be uploaded to this Google Form https: // forms.gle/KnZuYrxAHH7ofyhh9.

Questions about the position can be sent to Assistant Professor Roxanne Beltran (roxanne@ucsc.edu).

Please refer to Position JPF01585 in all correspondence.
