Recruitment/Posting Title Postdoctoral Associate, Center for Population- Level Bioethics (CPLB)
Department Inst-Hth,Hth Care Pol&Agng Res Salary Commensurate With Experience Posting Summary
The Center for Population-Level Bioethics (CPLB) at Rutgers University invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral associate position, with a strong possibility of renewal for a second year. Postdoctoral associates conduct independent research in population-level bioethics, mentored by Nir Eyal, Henry Rutgers Professor of Bioethics and founder and director of CPLB, and other CPLB and Rutgers faculty members. Population-level bioethics is a branch of bioethics that focuses on population health and its distribution.
In addition to carrying out independent research, the postdoctoral associate is expected to:
· Pursue publication in leading peer-reviewed journals.
· Prepare and submit abstracts for presentation at conferences in ethics, bioethics, or related fields.
· Actively participate in the life of CPLB by attending events, engaging our faculty and students in conversation, occasionally contributing to our online presence, potentially giving seminars on past research or works in progress, potentially organizing events, and potentially informally mentoring doctoral students affiliated with CPLB;
· Devote a portion of their time to CPLB funded projects and/or developing further applications for funding.
The position is based in New Brunswick, NJ. Remote work is allowed at the CPLB Director's discretion, but participation in some in-person events is expected. The selected candidate is expected to start on September 1st, 2024.
Applicants for the position should have completed a terminal degree in Philosophy, Political Theory, Public Health, Health Policy, Economics, Law, Medicine, or another relevant area by the position start date. A record of independent research in, or that seriously engages with issues in population- level bioethics, bioethics, applied ethics, moral philosophy, social or political philosophy is required, as is high-level ability in analytical thinking and writing, as demonstrated by a writing sample.
Applications should be submitted by November 17, 2023 and include the following documents:
· A cover letter
· A curriculum vitae
· A writing sample of 4,000-10,000 words, published or unpublished, that reflects the applicant's analytical skills and writing abilities. The writing sample may, but need not, be on population-level bioethics
· A research project proposal of 1,500-3,000 words, which the applicant aims to complete or substantially advance over their year at CPLB. The proposed research can be entirely philosophical/normative or combine empirical and normative approaches; it can be abstract or applied, but it must be in population-level bioethics.
· Three letters of recommendation emailed to forders@cplb.rutgers.edu. Please do not upload letters to the online application system.
Informal inquiries may be directed to Monica Magalhaes, Associate Director of CPLB, at mmagalhaes@cplb.rutgers.edu.

About CPLB and Rutgers: Founded in 2019, the Center for Population-Level Bioethics (CPLB) is a center dedicated to the study of macro-level bioethical dilemmas: those that arise outside the clinical encounter, at the level of the population, the state, the country, or the globe. Questions of interest range from the theoretical to the applied, for example how to conceptualize, measure and evaluate health inequalities or disease severity; how to prioritize resources between disease areas, rural and urban patients, and age cohorts or generations; the acceptability of paternalistic health promotion measures; equitable resource allocation during pandemic; and many others. Our approach emphasizes collaboration and interdisciplinarity, and seeks to inform and be informed by other fields of inquiry such as general ethics and philosophy, health policy, and health economics. We welcome innovative questions and methods and ambitious thinking, and value clear presentation of ideas, potentially using formal tools. CPLB brings together faculty and collaborators at Rutgers and beyond and will expand further in the near future. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a leading national research university. Its partners form one of the nation's largest academic health care systems, and the largest in New Jersey. Its Philosophy department, with which all current CPLB faculty are affiliated, has consistently been ranked second in the country by the Philosophical Gourmet Report, and has particular strength and renowned faculty in applied and normative ethics. CPLB is part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), New Jersey's academic health center, which takes an integrated approach to educating students, providing clinical care, and conducting research—all with the goal of improving human health. RBHS oversees eight schools, a behavioral health network, and multiple centers and institutes. CPLB is creating research partnerships within RBHS, within Rutgers, nationally, and internationally. Our offices are located in the center of New Brunswick, about an hour away from New York City, at the beautiful Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research.
