ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking to recruit a 3-year, full-time Postdoctoral research fellow to join the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.
Working as part of multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator, Sainan Sun, in delivery of research activity funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): ‘Interacting ice Sheet and Ocean Tipping Indicators, Processes, Impacts and Challenges (ISOTIPIC)’.
The aim of this project is to understand the processes controlling key tipping points (TPs) associated with the oceans and ice sheets and assess their potential impacts on society and the global Earth system. The project is a collaboration between the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, the University of Liverpool, the National Oceanography Centre, British Antarctic Survey, the University of Reading, the University of Bristol and the University of Southampton.
You will investigate the stability regime of West Antarctic Ice Sheet regarding the Marine Ice Cliff Instability (MICI) using the numerical ice-sheet model Úa, and develope and test the efficacy of early warning indicators.
Affiliated with the Northumbria University, the candidate will work with Dr. Sainan Sun (on MICI) and Prof. Hilmar Gudmundsson (on Early Warning indicators). The candidate will work as a part of an active research group Future of Ice on Earth in Northumbria University. Furthermore, the role holder will be expected to work closely with project collaborators from other research institutes.
The role holder will undertake, with appropriate support and guidance, individual and collaborative quantitative and qualitative research projects, resulting in excellent outputs of sufficient volume, quality, and impact that is internationally excellent in originality, significance and rigour to meet the terms of the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.
The role is a fixed term role of 3 years.
Further information about the role is available in the role description.
ABOUT THE TEAM
This Research Project is being delivered within the Geography and Environmental Sciences Department within the research team Future of Ice on Earth. The researchers in the team work together to predict global sea level changes, and in particular the sea level contribution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet by developing and running numerical ice and ocean models. Researchers are developing ice sheet model and new ice-ocean model configurations which underpin research activities at several UK Universities and worldwide.
ABOUT YOU
Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physics, mathematics, earth sciences) and have knowledge in related fields such as numerical modelling, geodynamics, fracture mechanics or continuum mechanics.
Further information about the requirements of the role is available in the person specification.
If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please contact Dr. Sainan Sun sainan.sun@northumbria.ac.uk.
