Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research
WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.
The Research Unit Snow and Atmosphere at SLF is concerned with the role of snow and ice in the climate system. The expertise in snow climatology and the related collaboration between SLF and MeteoSwiss should be developed further, especially related to projections of future snow cover in Switzerland. In this context, we are looking for the duration of 2 years for a
PostDoc / Scientist “Climate and Snow Modeling” 80-100% (f/m/d)
The work is concerned with the processing of meteorological input data from climate projections using methods such as downscaling and bias adjustment to force a snow cover model developed by the Operational Snow Hydrological Service at SLF. The ultimate goal of the position is to develop gridded snow cover projections for Switzerland consistent with the current CH2018 Swiss Climate Scenarios and to derive snow-climate indicators for different temporal and spatial domains. The results of your work will eventually be incorporated into the upcoming CH2025 climate scenario portfolio. You will work in the Snow Processes team at SLF and will maintain close links to the Climate Evolution Team of MeteoSwiss, including frequent visits to MeteoSwiss in Zurich. The workplace of the position is in Davos.
Ideally, you hold a Doctoral degreein environmental physics, atmospheric sciences, or a similar field and have a strong background in working with climate model data and in related statistical methods. In case you already have experience in downscaling and quantile mapping of gridded climate data, a Master degree might be eligible as well. In particular, programming skills (Python, R) and an interest in contributing to new snow products as a climate service are required. You have good oral and written communication skills in English. You are well organized and operate independently in a structured and efficient way. Furthermore, you appreciate working as part of a motivated, interdisciplinary team that operates at the interface between science and practice.
Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Christoph Marty (marty(at)slf.ch) and Sven Kotlarski (sven.kotlarski(at)meteoswiss.ch) will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
